The Contenders is a film series, which films are selected by curators in MoMA’s Department of Film, from major studio releases and top film festivals to represent the best of mainstream movies, independents, foreign-language films, documentaries, and art-house sensations.

Why these films are important? Let’s hear it from curators “Their significance can be attributed to a variety of factors, from structure to subject matter to language, but these films are united in their lasting impact on the cinematic art form. For this recurring series, the Department of Film combs through major studio releases and the top film festivals in the world, selecting influential, innovative films made in the past 12 months that we believe will stand the test of time. Whether bound for awards glory or destined to become a cult classic.”
I believe they are right. Last year, just to name a few, Captain Phillips, Blue Jasmine, Her, Gravity, Dallas Buyers Club, La grande bellezza (The Great Beauty) were shown in the Contenders 2013 series. And all of them were nominated for Golden Globe and Oscar awards and won some.
Opening the series at MoMA on November 13 is the New York premiere of J. C. Chandor’s third feature film, A Most Violent Year (2014), which stars Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain as residents of New York City during 1981, when the scourge of crime was a daily reality.
Now in its seventh year, the series highlights films that are contenders for lasting historical significance, often with special appearances by directors and actors.
This year the series includes films (same as last years) from the Film Society of Lincoln Center (FSLC)’s New York Film Festival (NYFF) and from FSLC and MoMA’s New Directors/New Films (NDNF) festivals too.
