Mayor Bill de Blasio “This kind of heat can be dangerous. People have to make smart decisions.” said on Monday at a press conference held at Office of Emergency Management.
And continued “People, of course, have to stay hydrated. Don’t stay out in the sun any longer than you have to.”

Yesterday it was very hot and humid, and it is today too. Based on the reports of the National Weather Service, temperatures on Monday are in the 90s, with the heat index values reaching as high as the high 90s.
“Stay in cool places” he said, and continued, “But I also remind you, at the same time – and we’re hearing this from Con-Ed as well – The last thing we want to see is any failures in our electrical system. So if lights don’t need to be on, they shouldn’t be on. If any kind of electrical appliance doesn’t need to be on, it shouldn’t be on. And air conditioning should be set to 78 degrees.”
Mayor de Blasio “For any one who needs relief from the heat and does not have a place to go, the city will be providing over 500 cooling centers” said, and announced “all city swimming pools will be open until 8 pm tonight.”
“Drink plenty of water. It’s the most fundamental message. Our mothers told us this many times over – it is true in these circumstances. The body needs a lot of water to stay cool. Keep drinking water, even if you don’t feel particularly thirsty. Just stay very, very hydrated.” de Blasio urged New Yorkers.
With Mayor de Blasio, Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Commissioner Joe Esposito, Homeless Services Commissioner Gilbert Taylor and Health Department Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett were at the press conference.
Dr. Mary Basset advised people to stay in a cool place, or as an alternative to take cool, but not freezing cold, showers , and reminded “This is not a weather to get a tan,“ she also added, “Stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol, caffeine. Water is the best beverage to stay hydrated. Beer is not!”

Mayor de Blasio smiled when Health Department Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett said, “Water is the best beverage to stay hydrated. Beer is not!”
Gilbert Taylor said, “The Department of Homeless Services has issued a Code Red Alert, with additional outreach and transportation to cooling centers.”
Mayor Bill de Blasio and city commissioners urged New Yorkers to use common sense:
- -Stay in cool places, if possible, go to an air-conditioned building.
- -Drink plenty of water, listen to your body.
- Watch for signs of heat related illnesses such as hot dry skin or cold clammy skin, vomiting, dizziness, confusion.
- Never leave your children and pets in the car.
- Pay special attention to the elderly, the very young, and anyone with a pre-existing medical condition. New Yorkers should check in on older neighbors who may be isolated from friends and family.
“Again, any questions about health and safety in the context of this heat emergency, you can call 3-1-1 or you can go to nyc.gov.“ Mayor de Blasio added.
