Memorial Day is a national holiday to honor, to remember the men and women who gave their lives defending their country.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio joined other dignitaries on Monday to honor those who died while serving in the armed forces at a Memorial Day commemoration ceremony at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.
Mayor Bill de Blasio delivered remarks at the Intrepid Museum.
“Today we honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to fight for our own independence (…) We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to all who have served our country and all those serving us now ” said Mayor de Blasio.
And continued: ” They have exhibited the utmost courage, fortitude and resilience in protecting this nation and the world – which is why every veteran should have a home, a good job and high-quality mental health services when they return home. As a City, we have committed to delivering these essentials resources that veterans deserve.”
Wreath laying ceremony
A ceremonial wreath laying followed the remarks. Four wreaths were tossed in the Hudson River next to the Intrepid
After the wreath laying ceremony, a three-volley rifle salute took place at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.
At the ceremony there were hundreds of veterans and service members representing wars and conflicts from WWII to the present.
After a rainy night, it became a nice, warm, sunny afternoon. And everybody enjoyed the ceremony.
